Benefits of shampoo bars include:

* Less waste - no more nasty plastic bottles!

* No preservatives - simple, clean, good for you ingredients.

* Many people find that, once their hair adjusts, they are able to go longer between washes, their hair has more body, and is more manageable.

* Shampoo bars are great for travelling - no mess!

For best results:

* Wet hair thoroughly

* Wet the shampoo bar

* Gently smooth the bar from hairline to crown, or work in little circles around your head, working all the way around your hairline. You can also lather the shampoo bar in your hands (or in our sisal soap saver bags!), then smooth the lather along your hair & scalp, using your fingers like a comb. If your hair is longer, try tying it in a ponytail before wetting.  After wetting, rub the shampoo bar all around the head, leaving the ponytail alone. Then take out the ponytail, massage all around the head & scalp, and as you rinse, the lather running down the length of the hair should be enough to cleanse it well.

* Work with the direction of your hair.  Scalp massage is good but work from front to back and down without unnecessary friction or circling. How much the bar lathers will depend largely on how hard or soft your water is.  We have hard water but it still lathers great!

* Those with hard water (or new to natural hair care) may also find that a pre-rinse is helpful to clarify their hair prior to shampooing.  To make a simple rinse with apple cider vinegar, mix 1 tsp vinegar with 8-12 oz. of water.  Pour vinegar mixture slowly over hair and let sit for a minute before rinsing with cool water and then shampooing as usual.  Apple cider vinegar is great for balancing the skin's PH, combatting dandruff and dermatitis, as well as adding softness and shine to your hair.  If you'd rather not use vinegar, you can substitute 1 tsp. baking soda for the vinegar with similar results. We have fairly hard water and I've found I can skip this step.

Please note: as with most natural products, you will typically experience a transitional period.  For some this may be only a few washes, for other it may take a few weeks to a month - everyone is different.  Most people agree it's worth the wait and, once they've transitioned, they'll never go back to bottled shampoos/conditioners again.
